Devotion: 2

Day 2: Breaking Chains of Oppression

Reading: Isaiah 58:6-7; Luke 4:18

Devotional: God defines true fasting with six powerful action verbs: loose the bonds of wickedness, undo heavy burdens, let the oppressed go free, break every yoke, share your bread, and bring the poor into your house. This isn't about what we give up—it's about who we lift up.

True fasting aligns our hearts, hands, and lifestyle with God's compassion. It means walking people out of bondage, not just praying them out. Consider the yokes in your life and in others' lives—addictions, unhealthy relationships, financial traps, trauma. God calls us to be repairers of broken walls and restorers of streets and dwellings. Your fast should increase freedom in someone's life, not just discipline in yours.

Reflection: What injustice have I ignored? Who is God calling me to help walk out of bondage?
