Devotional: Day 2
Satan's first temptation targeted Jesus' physical hunger. Bread was not sinful. Hunger was not sinful. The temptation was to satisfy a legitimate need in an illegitimate way and at the wrong time.
Many temptations begin with legitimate desires: the desire to be loved, accepted, secure, successful, or comforted. The enemy's strategy is to convince us that immediate gratification is more important than faithful obedience.
Appetite is a gift from God, but it makes a poor master.
Our culture encourages us to satisfy every craving immediately. God teaches us the value of self-control. Every "no" to sinful temptation is ultimately a "yes" to God's greater purpose.
